This month our featured guest speaker is Rabbi Charles Savenor
Topic is "Mystery and History: George Washington’s Letter to the Jews": Washington’s letter to the Jews of Newport, RI creates a precedent of equality unknown to Jews during centuries of exile. However, many questions exist about this 1790 document, including who actually wrote the letter and what our first president meant.
Rabbi Charlie Savenor serves as the Director of Congregational Education at the Park Avenue Synagogue. A graduate of Brandeis University, he was ordained at JTS Rabbinical School in 1996. He earned a Masters of Education at Columbia University, Teachers College in 2008. A member of the International board of Gesher, Rabbi Savenor is a volunteer fundraiser for lone soldiers through Nefesh B'Nefesh. Rabbi Savenor’s articles on leadership and parenting and fatherhood have appeared in "The Jerusalem Post" and "The Jewish Week," and he blogs for Times of Israel. A Red Sox and Patriots fan, he lives on the USW with his wife, Julie Walpert, and their sons, Joseph and Benjamin.
