JICNY News: Summer 2015

Chairman's Corner

The flowers are blooming. The sun is shining. Summer has arrived! I am proud of the more than 220 events the JICNY offers each year. But our summer programs are my favorite. I look forward to spending Shabbat afternoons on the terrace with JICNYers, cool refreshments, and our top-notch educational and inspiring speakers. The program is already off to a great start, with a special treat set for this month.

I also enjoy having the opportunity to meet and spend time with so many of JICNY's outdoorsy members while we take our annual rafting trip down the Delaware River. It's a classic American summer activity- with a JICNY twist!

As we make the transition from one season to another, I marvel (as I often do) at JICNY's many accomplishments over the past year. On behalf of our entire board, I thank everyone who gives so much of their time and financial resources to the JICNY as volunteers, donors as well as to our small but highly-productive staff. None of our success would be existent without each of you. Thank you!

Wishing everyone a wonderful, safe and exciting summer ahead!

Looking forward to seeing you during our busy, educational, and fun summer!

Sincerely, Jeff Stier

Founder's Thoughts...

"No Act of Kindness, No Matter how Small, is ever Wasted"-Aesop

With smiles on our faces, we reflect on the past nine months and all that the JICNY has accomplished. From the first JICNY Shabbat dinner 14 years ago, we have consistently stayed focused in serving as a point of contact for all individuals to feel comfortable in the New York Jewish Community. Whether it is Shabbat dinners, Torah classes, Networking events or cultural salons, all are able to find a place of religious and personal comfort within the JICNY.

Being a smaller organization, people are often astonished by the amount of programs and events we offer collectively over a 12- month period. Time after time, we make it clear that the events and programs we offer would not happen without the hundreds of dedicated volunteers over the years. With Jodi and Gavin in Israel this past year and Steve continuing to lead more Birthright trips, it has never been more evident how fortunate we are to have been blessed with such amazing volunteers. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication!

As we enter into the summer and welcome back Jodi & Gavin, we hope that you will join us for our plethora of summer events ranging from rooftop drinks, couples cooking competitions, Shabbat afternoons on the Terrace, Networking and much more.

We thank you for your continued support of the JICNY sand look forward to continue growing together as individuals as an organization.

Best Wishes for a Great Summer! Steve, Jodi & Gavin

Message from our Development Director: Grant Silverstein

"Deeds of giving are the very foundation of the world." Pirkei Avot 1:2

Dear Friends,

The JICNY serves over 10,000 Jewish Professionals by creating a community that offers a variety of opportunities and resources to them. While we proudly host over 200 events a year, this would not be possible without the support from generous donors. As we enter the summer, a time when many are travelling and enjoying the warm weather, JICNY leadership is busy planning for another great year ahead filled with new and exciting classes, social and cultural programs, and Shabbat meals.

Sponsoring a JICNY Monday night class or Shabbat dinner is a great way to honour a loved one, share the news of a Simcha or show your appreciation for the work of the JICNY.

Please consider a donation to the JICNY for the 2015-2016 programming year. The only gift too small, is no gift at all.

I welcome the opportunity to speak with you about opportunities and areas of the sponsorship that are available. I hope that we will get to speak in the months to come. I can always be reached by the phone at (212) 749-1434 or by email, grant@jicny.com

Wishing a warm and exciting summer, Grant

JICNY Profiles

Kate Linton from Minsk, Belarus

I was born and grew up in Misnk, Blarus. In pre-Soviet times, Belarus, along with Ukraine, Lithuania and Poland, used to be the epicentre of Ashkanazi Jewish thought and Learning and was also the birthplace of Hasidic Judaism and Chabad.

I was moved to the United States 7 years ago, settled in the city and have been working in property management. For me, like for many others, JICNY has opened a new dimension of being connected to the Torah and to the Community, of getting involved and giving back.

JICNY is a family- "Kol Israel arevim ze la-ze"(trans: all Jews are responsible for one another) Steve, Alisa Adler and Jodi live it every day; through their personal example, the amount of efforts, love and care they in invest in every Monday class, Shabbat dinner, Connection events, advice...you name it- they teach and help us grow and become grateful and strong Jews.
