International Connections Launches to Fanfare in New York
"Foreigners only need apply!"
New York: There aren't many places in New York where a foreign passport gains you exclusive access. But Jewish International Connection, a group whose mission is to unite the thousands of non-American Jewish adults in this city, has proven an instant hit.
The group started informally last year, with Shabbat dinners every few months. But due to overwhelming response, and interest amongst attendees to expand the agenda, "Jewish International Connection" was launched. Attracting Jews in their 20s and 30s, so far from 25 countries (including: Turkey, the Bahamas, India, Costa Rica, Ireland, Australia and Peru), JICNY is fashionably foreign. In addition to continuing the sell-out Shabbat dinners, the enthusiastic committee has planned monthly drinks, a stand-up comedy night, a Florida retreat, and classes teaching "ancient Jewish wisdom" over Israeli wine.
"Our database grows by 60 new names a week," says Jodi Samuels, founder of JICNY. "New York is a transient city and there is a huge number of people who come here from all over the world, and arrive without any connections. Our group provides an immediate forum to meet others in the same situation, sharing the common bond of being Jewish."
Nicole Fischer, from Chile, said about her first event, "I laughed all night with people in English and Spanish and must have heard 3 other languages being spoken at my table alone. I can't wait for the next event!"
