Who's Who At JICNY
What’s great about the JICNY is that there is always someone new to meet and we're excited to help you all connect. There is so much action at the JICNY and we have been fortunate enough to meet so many new faces. We'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of our friends. We may be from all over the world, but our most special moments are when we come together.

Richard Bernstein
Michigan, USA
Richard has been a guest speaker for numerous Jewish Organizations in our community. We've had him join us as a speaker and have loved having him join us as a guest for many events ever since. He is a tireless advocate for disabled rights and providing a voice to those who would otherwise be forced to be silent. Blind since birth, Richard is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Northwestern University School of Law. He is an attorney with the Bernstein Law Firm in Farmington Hills, Michigan. He has been honored by numerous prestigious institutions and organizations. In his spare time, he is an avid runner, completing ten marathons— including four New York City marathons— and the Ironman triathlon last year in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Richard is another inspiring JICNY community member that we think you should meet.

Sam Bodenheimer
“Bodi” is a highly accomplished singer/songwriter, film/television composer, chazzan, and entertainment industry entrepreneur. Invited one fateful Friday evening last year as our guest singer and speaker, Bodi developed an instant connection with the JICNY family and has served as our chazzan/music director ever since, bringing great energy, music, and words of inspiration to our monthly Shabbat dinners. A tireless advocate for international Jewish and social justice causes, Bodi has utilized his position in the entertainment industry to produce televised and well promoted benefits for international charities. As founder and CEO of Spicerack Music, he is a leading music provider for both live events and film/tv productions. Bsamim Orchestra, a division of Spicerack, is one of NY’s most sought after Jewish wedding performance groups. Bodi received his JD/MBA from Fordham University.

Jordan Bienenstock
Belle Harbor, New York, USA
I was raised in a Belle Harbor just four houses from the ocean but I am equally addicted to the energy, noise and variety that city life offers. A few of my closest friends from abroad invited me to a JICNY Friday night dinner. I was immediately hooked by the exciting group of foreign sounds and backgrounds and attended several JICNY events and even became a member of the JICNY business network group. JICNY is a great vehicle to meet interesting and wonderful people from around the globe who share similar interests and beliefs with fresh perspectives. Thanks Gavin and Jodi- Cheers!

Renatt Brodsky
Israel
Last year, I wanted to take some Torah classes and a good friend told me that Steve was teaching at the JICNY on Monday nights. So I went. The internationals are super friendly, the lectures are always very inspiring and now I even stay for Yoni's kabbalah class. So I get my double dose of Torah on Monday evenings and I feel ready to start my week off spiritually prepared. I've also had the real pleasure of getting to know the amazing Samuels' family these past few months as I was involved in helping to work on the 4th Annual Gala this year. For those of you who attended, I hope you enjoyed! And for those who didn't, I look forward to meeting all of you sometime soon! What makes JICNY so special are the people who care so much about the organization and keep it alive- that's all of you.

Stephanie Grayson-Zane
Corporate Communications Expert/Social Media Maven, instructor of JICNY's Twitter workshops
Corporate communications expert and social media maven Stephanie Grayson-Zane found the JICNY networking group after searching the web for “Jewish + networking + business” and has become one of the “core regulars” at JICNY business networking meetings every other Tuesday morning. She has always felt passionate about being actively involved in the Jewish community, and is a third generation Jewish-American with family roots in Eastern Europe (which means that she probably knows if you’re talking about her in Yiddish!). Stephanie brings to the JICNY networking group her expertise in providing business communication consulting, training, and coaching to both individuals and groups, from prepping a CEO for a compelling keynote address to helping a start-up company tweet on Twitter. Recently, you may have seen/heard her quoted in the Wall Street Journal, on National Public Radio (NPR) or online at Mediabistro.com. She encourages everyone to attend a Tuesday morning JICNY networking meeting in 2010!

Danya Hakimian
I grew up in different parts of America, along with my Persian family that eventually settled in New York. I am drawn to the JICNY for its thoughtful programs, unbelievably warm sense of community, and the foreign dimension that makes me feel somehow very at home. I see my time in New York as not just another adventure or search for new experiences, but an opportunity to build real connections that are meaningful and lasting. I love my job on the business team at W Magazine, and approach every day with a passion for what I do and a commitment to meeting others that share my enthusiasm - like some of the great people I’ve been lucky to know through the JICNY.

Cem Horada
Istanbul, Turkey
I remember one JICNY Shabbat dinner I was sitting next to a guy who had spent some time traveling in Turkey. After a few minutes of exchanging stories and sharing experiences it had turned out that this person had met a friendly stranger to show him around Istanbul. That friendly stranger was my best friend from growing up! I've also experienced a really special sense of community at JICNY, not only are there JICNY events to attend but Steve has set me and some friends up with local families to spend the holidays with. I'm grateful and fortunate to have such a community so far from home.

Liron
Israel
I was born in New York to Israeli parents. I moved to Israel at the age of 5 and then moved back to NYC when I was accepted into the MBA program at NYU. I hold a B.Sc. in Chemistry from The Hebrew University in Jerusalem and have focused my former Finance career working mostly with the Pharmaceutical industry. Fast forward a few years and I'm pursuing my dream as a full-time artist. Other than commissions, I mostly oil paint nature which I construct as a visual metaphor. See: www.Liron.com. I heard about JICNY when I attended a party at Aish. I wish to thank Jodi and Gavin and Steve for their beautiful spirit and amazing warmth and dedication and for creating such a unique, welcoming, and fascinating organization!

Most of us left our families and home countries to come to a city which, at times, can be anything from incredible to strange. No matter what our different experiences in New York are, it is comforting to have cousins and an extended family to fall back on. JICNY is that extended network of "cousins". Its organizers have given me a platform to explore this city from a uniquely Jewish perspective, together with young Jewish professionals from around the world. From sharing Shabbat dinners, to attending weekly shiurim, to socializing at business networking events, JICNY gives you VIP access to Jewish life in New York.
Benjamin Mizrahi
Israel
Benjamin was born in Haifa, Israel. His parents, Hannah and Haim Mizrahi raised him together with his brother, Yonatan, who is currently serving in the IDF. Following his graduation from Yavne Yeshiva high-school, Benjamin joined the IDF as an educational trainer at Israel’s highest ranking military boarding school, Beit Biram Military Academy. “While serving in IDF, I was able to develop essential critical thinking and leadership skills which I now successfully integrate into all aspects of my life”. After his resignation as a first-sergeant, Benjamin decided to leave Israel temporarily to gain a grasp on the Israeli-Palestinian dispute from international eyes. While living in the States, Benjamin served in various humanitarian activities and interacted with diverse segments of societies simultaneously with his studying at Yeshiva University. Benjamin is supposed to graduate in May 2010, and he hopes to attend second degree in Public Policy and Law.
“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give” (Winston Churchill).
Edward Neiger
New York, NY
I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and moved to the UWS approximately 5 years ago. I immediately heard about Jodi and Gavin Samuels’ hospitality and kindness, as well as the various meals and events that they host and was first introduced to the JICNY by Jeff Stier. I had attended the annual dinner and silent auction at which Jeff was honored. Since then I've met many close friends at JICNY events. After working for years as an attorney at one of the city's large firms I decided to start my own firm, Neiger LLP. I recently joined the JICNY networking group and have really expanded my practice through JICNY contacts. I also enjoy painting (www.creativeclimax.com) and running in Central Park.

Lorelle Nevils
New York, NY
While there are many Jewish organizations to be a part of in New York, JICNY is my favorite one. As an American, I especially enjoy meeting and interacting with Jews from all over the world, learning about their cultures, as well as the Jewish communities from where they originated. JICNY offers a warm and caring environment to both Americans and international Jews, where people of all backgrounds and religious levels feel welcomed and comfortable. It's a blessing to know that JICNY is extremely reliable if assistance is needed with a job, networking, apartment search, or even a place to go to for Shabbat or any Jewish holiday. From Steve's inspiring Monday night classes to adventurous whitewater rafting trips to sophisticated Shabbat dinners, JICNY provides a plethora of exciting events that I can appreciate socially and/or spiritually.

Alex Sherman
I am originally from St. Petersburg, Russia. After finally receiving the permission to leave the USSR in 1989, my family immigrated to Boston, MA. There, I studied Computer Science at MIT and later had the opportunity to be one of the first architects of the Akamai Network, the company that today serves 60% of the Internet traffic. I moved to NY six years ago to study for a PhD in CS. What I like most about JICNY is the diversity of the participants, who come from all over the world. I have met some of my best friends in New York through JICNY and continue to enjoy Shabbat dinners and other events.

Meredith Wolsh
Upstate, New York
JICNY is an organization that is not just for Internationals, and I'm living proof. Born and raised in upstate New York, now living in Manhattan, I have taken full advantage of JICNY. The best part, I can always can always anticipate meeting people from diverse backgrounds with different perspectives.
Cara Youseman
Vancouver, BC
I am originally from Vancouver, British Columbia and when it was time for a new adventure, I thought New York would be a great one. The last year and a half has exceeded my expectations as New York has been a beautiful adventure for me. NY offers innumerable opportunities to be involved in the Jewish community, yet I had found it challenging to find the right fit for me. I first heard of JICNY last year when a friend suggested I go their Passover Seder. It was one of the most enjoyable seders I had been to and the people were so interesting and friendly. In fact, I didn't have a Seder to go to the second night, and some people I had met at the JICNY Seder generously invited me to their Seder for the second night! Since then, I have been to several events and look forward to meeting YOU at future events!

Jo Zmood
Australia
I arrived in New York in 2006 to be closer to my family, after having lived between London , Brussels and Tel Aviv. Not knowing many people in NY, my brother who is actively involved in the community, suggested a variety of events for meeting new and interesting people. After having tried a few options JICNY is where I felt most at home with other strangers in this foreign land we now call home. Today I am settled in NY working in advertising and completing my certification as a Health Counselor with a wide range of international friends. Thank you JIC for your support in establishing my new life, and helping me discover the international flavor of being a Jewish foreigner in this wonderful city.

Rabbi Shalom Morris - Educational Director - Congregation Shearith Israel
Shalom Morris is the Educational Director at Shearith Israel, the Spanish Portuguese Synagogue of NY. Born Ashkenazi, he has become a 'switch hitter' and now attempts to navigate both Sephardic and Ashkenazi, as well as American and International, communities. Often asked, 'You're a rabbi? How old are you?' Shalom is both relatable and knowledgeable. He has become involved in JICNY, at times as a rabbi and at times as a participant, and loves the mixture of backgrounds, cultures and languages that are at the core of this wonderful and inspiring organization.

Cathy Kadets
There is no group more welcoming for Jews in New York City than the JICNY. They are beacon when away from home that you can gravitate towards and be welcomed. Throughout the years, I have become a more observant Jewess. So while it's always nice to be home with family for the Jewish holidays, it's not always the best solution if you want to say, keep kosher for Passover or eat in a Sukkah. If not for the JICNY, I would not have a proper place to go for these holidays. Steve, Jodi and Gavin have gone so far out of their way (and in such a joyous manner) to help me in so many ways and make it possible for me to perform mitzvahs. But aside from the great work they do, they have become personal friends who follow-up on my life, root for me in all my endeavors, and make living in NY a home for evey Jew who finds their way here. I think anyone who has come to the JICNY can say the same. I don't think we can thank them enough for everything they do.
Tatyana Zlotsky
Moscow
Tatyana Zlotsky is originally from Moscow but she and her husband, Stan Zlotsky, have been living in NYC for four years. Naturally drawn to foreign cultures and the local Jewish community, Tatyana reached out to the JICNY last year and became an active volunteer. She is a Director of Marketing for an advertising technology company in NYC and in her free time she enjoys international foods, yoga, scuba diving and traveling.

Guy Halfteck
Haifa, Israel
I came to NY for graduate school, and I loved it. I then spent a few more years in school up in Boston, but eventually moved back to NYC. And while Israel is my home, the Upper West Side (just a few blocks from where Isaac Bashevis Singer used to live and write) is my home away from home. I love being involved in Jewish life and learn about the rich history of Jewish immigration to the US—of both Ashkenazi and Sepharadic Jews (just like myself!). JICNY is an amazing place because through the dedicated effort of its team it creates the opportunity to connect with friends and fellow Jews from all over the world and be part of an exciting and vibrant community.

Daniel Vahab
Daniel Vahab is a freelance writer for various newspapers, with a particular niche in Jewish publications. His work has appeared in the Jewish Forward, the Jewish Post, the Jewish Journal, the Jewish State, as well as the Baltimore Sun and the New York Press, among others. Daniel is currently employed by St. Martin's Press, a division of Macmillan. Most recently, Daniel Vahab served as Managing Editor for Society & Diplomatic Review, a United Nations accredited publication that serves as a directory of UN Ambassadors and covers diplomatic events.
For the past year, Daniel has been writing his first book on antisemitism. His book explores the roots of both old and new antisemitism, while questioning what can be done to stop the hate. From antisemitism on the internet to pop culture and beyond, it delves into the world’s oldest hatred leaving its reader wondering if there is light at the end of the tunnel for today’s Jew.
Alex (Sasha) Loseva
I was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and grew up in the Midwood area of Brooklyn. After finishing my studies at NYU and Teachers College, Columbia University I now spend my days working with young kids as a pediatric speech-language pathologist. I love my work because it allows me to help kids with speech and language challenges communicate better. It also lets me explore my creative side through using play and fun activities to reach out to kids. Working with young children can sometimes be exhausting, but at the end of the day is always rewarding! J Outside of work, I enjoy travel, musical theatre, taking dance classes (zumba & belly dancing in particular at this time), reading, cooking, and event planning.
I’m always drawn to people and my fellow Jews from other countries, which is what initially attracted me to JICNY. But it’s JICNY’s founders’ and team’s genuine warmth, contagious energy, and selfless dedication that keep me and so many others coming back again and again. They continually inspire us to reach out to other Jews and to take steps to learn & be better, happier, and more well-rounded people. I look forward to meeting you at a JICNY event!
Mark Dresdner
JICNY and Jodi and Gavin personally have provided me with highly valued support in a myriad of ways, since I arrived in New York a decade ago from Australia via Chicago. Their generosity has included hosting my shevah brachot in their home and Gavin learning Gemara with me one-on-one. In addition, when I launched my management consulting firm, I joined JICNY’s networking group. This led to two new clients within a couple of months and wonderful network of professionals I rely on for things such as technology support and accounting advice.
Career wise, I design and deliver business growth for clients as a hands-on, collaborative management consultant through my firm VGC Advisors. I am passionate about making a difference through strategic planning, marketing, and pricing projects for clients in any industry.
Anna Oshchepkova
I came to US 4 years ago from Yekaterinburg, Russia (the city is located in the Ural Mountains – and yes, it is COLD in the winter). Working for Jewish Agency for Israel back home made me miss the diverse Jewish community in US, and I could not find anything inspirational until I discovered the world of JICNY through my friend. This is an amazing organization where you feel home and are always welcomed and surrounded by Jews from all parts of the world. Steve, Jodi and Gavin are great leaders and they are helping a lot of people to become part of the Jewish community in New York in every way. I have been to many amazing Shabbat dinners, holidays, Monday classes and other exciting events, where I have met great people and always left inspired. I am very grateful for being a part of JICNY and I believe that organizations like this can change many lives!
