Tisha B’Av, the most solemn day of the Jewish calendar, commemorates the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in ancient Jerusalem. Over the years, this day has also come to remind us of other historic tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people.
Upon entering enter the Synagogue, people do not greet or say hello to one another in a jovial manner. Tish B'av is a 24-hour fast day and similar to a day of mourning. Many people will be sitting on low stools or on the floor.
